What is
Vedic Meditation?

Vedic meditation is an effortless, natural form of meditation that's perfect for busy modern lives. If you can think thoughts, you can meditate.

There's no need to:

  • Quiet your mind
  • Focus or concentrate
  • Sit in uncomfortable poses

It's designed for people just like you – those with hectic schedules who want to accomplish more while feeling less stressed. Nothing about it depends on picturing anything, so it works just as well if you have aphantasia.

“Maya helped to guide our non-profit organization's members through a 30-minute meditation. She was calm, professional, and so kind to all of our members. She helped keep us engaged through teaching us about meditation practices as well as walk us through some techniques on how we could carry out our meditation post-class. I would highly recommend The Spring Meditation for group sessions, and definitely request Maya as an instructor!”

Who is the teacher, and what lineage is this?
Maya Kumits was initiated by Thom Knoles and teaches Vedic Meditation in his lineage. She co-founded The Spring Meditation, a Vedic Meditation studio in Soho, New York City, and taught its four-day courses and group sessions there until the studio closed in October 2020. She now teaches independently from Gowanus, Brooklyn.
Is Vedic Meditation the same as Transcendental Meditation or mindfulness?
Vedic Meditation and Transcendental Meditation come from the same Vedic tradition and both use a personal mantra given by a teacher, taught over four consecutive days. Mindfulness is a different thing altogether: it asks you to watch your thoughts and stay present. Vedic Meditation asks nothing of your attention — the mantra does the work, which is why it suits people who have tried mindfulness and concluded they are bad at meditating.
Will I be able to meditate successfully?
Yes! If you can think thoughts, you can meditate. This technique is designed for everyone, even self-proclaimed "control freaks" or those who think they can't sit still.
Do I have to meditate twice a day, every day?
For optimal benefits, yes. But don't worry – we'll show you how to easily integrate it into your busy life.
How can I fit two 20-minute meditations into my schedule?
The time you spend meditating is returned through increased productivity. We'll work with you to find the perfect times in your day.
Do I need a quiet, special space to meditate?
Not at all! You can meditate anywhere you can sit comfortably – on a bus, in a park, or at your desk.
Do I have to be into yoga to do this?
Absolutely not. Vedic Meditation is separate from yoga and requires no physical flexibility or spiritual beliefs.

About Your Teacher: Maya Kumits

Maya Kumits was initiated by Thom Knoles and teaches Vedic Meditation in his lineage. She co-founded The Spring Meditation, a Vedic Meditation studio in Soho, New York City, where she taught the four-day course and led group sessions until the studio closed in October 2020. She now teaches independently from Gowanus, Brooklyn, alongside her Structural Integration practice.

Her students are mostly busy people who assumed meditation wasn't for them — the ones who can't sit still, can't stop thinking, or have tried mindfulness and quietly concluded they were bad at it. Vedic Meditation asks none of that of you, which is why it tends to stick.
