Your Neck Is Not a Separate Problem

What tensegrity changes about how we look at you

Someone wrote to me before booking. She had found this work about a year earlier, she was ready to begin the full ten-session series, and she wanted one answer first. Could she do Structural Integration while also seeing another practitioner about her neck?

Good question, and I gave her a long answer. Underneath it sat an assumption I want to pull out into the light, because I hear it in the studio most weeks. Her neck hurt. So her neck was the problem. So the work was to fix her neck.

The tower of blocks

Picture a child stacking wooden blocks. Each block rests on the one below and carries whatever sits above it. Weight runs straight down the column. Pull out the fourth block and the tower comes down.

Most of us carry that picture around for our own bodies. Vertebrae stacked like blocks, a load pressing straight down through the column. Something slides out of line, so you put it back in line.

The picture is easy to hold. It is also a poor description of the thing you are standing up in right now.

The other picture

Take a handful of rigid struts and hang them inside a web of elastic cables so that no strut ever touches another strut. Nothing rests on anything. The struts float, held apart by the pull of the cables around them, and the cables keep their shape because the struts press outward against them. The structure holds itself up through balanced tension.

Press down on the top and it yields, then returns. Shorten one cable at the bottom left and the shape changes at the top right, in a place your hand never went near.

Buckminster Fuller named these structures tensegrity, squeezing together tension and integrity. Mark Westmoquette has a short video that shows one moving in the hand, and two minutes of watching a model do this will do more for the idea than another paragraph from me.

Your body is the second one

Your bones do not stack. They float in fascia, the connective web that wraps each muscle and each bone and runs unbroken from the sole of your foot to the top of your skull. That web stays under tension. The bones push out into it, the web pulls in against them, and your shape right now is the settlement those two forces have reached.

Researchers still argue about how far to carry the model, and I would rather say so than oversell it. The part I can vouch for shows up on my table every week: pull on one region of a tensioned web and the strain travels somewhere else.

A jaw that clenches through the night tugs on a chest that never opens all the way. A hip that stopped rotating after an ankle sprain in college leaves a shoulder turning you instead. The neck that aches at four in the afternoon is often the loudest part of a pattern that began somewhere quieter, years earlier, in a place that has never hurt at all.

Different practitioners look at different things

A chiropractor looks at the spine and its alignment. A physical therapist looks at the injured tissue and the strength surrounding it. A massage therapist finds the muscle that has gone tight and works on that muscle.

These are all legitimate ways to look, and I send people to each of them. They share a starting point: the part that hurts.

Structural Integration begins somewhere else. I am looking at how tension and support are distributed through the whole system, and at what else in your body is feeding the strain in your neck.

Inside a session

You will spend part of the hour standing, walking, or breathing while I work, because a change your body cannot use while upright is gone by the time you reach the subway. We look at how you move before we start and again before you leave, so you feel the difference rather than take my word for it.

The ten-session series moves through the body in an order for the same reason. The first session opens the breath and the outer layer of the whole body. The second goes to your feet and how you meet the ground. Someone arrives with a sore neck and spends an early hour having their ribs and their feet worked on, which can feel like a detour and is not one.

Back to her question

I told her much of what I have told you here. Working with the whole system can change the strain her neck is under. I made no promise that her pain would go, and I made no claim about what happens inside a disc or a nerve, because those belong to the medical professional managing her care.

That leaves the practical half of her question, which deserves its own answer: can you do this work alongside chiropractic, physical therapy, or acupuncture, and is there an order to it?
